Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are K-Middle School students who attend a Title I DC public school and receive special education services. We proudly support our special education population which constitutes about 23%, including five self-contained classrooms, who support students with varying disabilities including Autism and ID. Students within our self-contained classrooms have intensive communication deficits and learning needs. Our dedicated staff and students work tireless via the implementation of evidence-based practices to bridge those gaps.
Our students are energetic, creative and courageous.
Each day, students access academic instruction, targeted interventions, and communication supports. In special education, we often encounter problem behavior which can interfere with students accessing instruction. It is important to know, that problem behavior is a form of communication and as educators it is our goal to identify what each student is trying to communicate. Our team works diligently to teach more appropriate ways to communicate and reduce problem behavior; allowing students to not only access instruction but enjoy it!
My Project
Help our special education scholars access distant learning instruction by having access to technology. Our amazing teachers, have begun distant learning lessons. However, many of our scholars do not have devices at home nor the means to attain them. These students deserve an equal opportunity to access all of the instructional resources available.
We are requesting five Microsoft Surface Go computers.
These devices will help students access group and 1:1 instruction with their instructional team. It will also allow for close monitoring of each students Individualized Education Plans (IEP) goals.
Consistency and repetition are key for our special education scholars. Access to their teachers and peers during this extended period of distant learning, will allow them to maintain routines. Our scholars are eager to participate in live instruction, please help us give them that opportunity. We are asking for devices that are compatible with our district, thus they can continue to be used when we return to on-campus instruction.
