Help me give my students the opportunity to learn off screen! I want my kids to have a choice in how they learn. Reading the Serengeti Rules will help relate their learning to the world around them.
My students are a diverse group of kids in the 9th and 10th grades in a large urban school district. We are a mix of all socioeconomic statuses, religions, and ethnic backgrounds. Additionally, students have a diverse academic background as well. They range from recent immigrants just learning English, students with learning disabilities, to gifted and talented (GATE). Many of our students are bused in from adjacent communities because of the academic rigor and opportunities for extended learning available at our school.
I am teaching a collaborative Biology and an Advanced Biology course this year.
The collaborative course is a co-taught class with a mix of students in the general and special education populations while the advanced class consists students in the GATE and seminar programs. My students have many different talents and abilities and love using their strengths to express their understanding of our content.
My Project
With so much of our time being spent online, I want to give my students the opportunity to move away from their computers and still learn! This year, I am giving my students a choice in how they demonstrate their understanding. Some of the options in their choice board will include activities that don't require a computer and more screen time.
I want to use the book, Serengeti Rules, to reinforce the key concepts we study through a "book club" for Biology.
The themes covered in the book align well with the disciplinary core ideas as well as the thematic units I am using this year: Africa & Homeostasis. The book club is a fun way to let kids use their strengths to express themselves in class.
