My Students

My students are awesome! Despite qualifying for public preschool because they have a disability, developmental delay or come from a low-income household, all of my preschoolers started the school year ready to learn. Their favorite center on the first day of school was the writing center. They are excited to learn how to write their names and everything else!

Only children believe they're capable of anything.

While many grown-ups think that our students cannot achieve at high levels, our school knows better. Our school serves a population with high numbers of low-income households and English Language Learners. While the school has struggled with performance levels, I am excited to be a part of a team that is rallying around our students and families to improve outcomes and recognizes the importance of the foundational skills we teach in preschool.

My Project

We all know that preschoolers learn best with hands-on materials! Take home materials are especially critical for my young students with special needs. They cannot learn online on Zoom for their entire school day. They will learn important cognitive, social-emotional and motor skills better with hands on materials and manipulative that I can teach during short online sessions and that can be used for practice at home with their families during remote learning. While this global pandemic is certainly devastating and making teaching much more challenging, I know I can empower families in their role as their child's first teacher and the people who are most knowledgable about their child.

Providing these materials for my students to use during remote learning will better support their learning and empower their families to learn about and support their children's development in cognitive, social-emotional and motor skills at home.

During this past week as I have reached out to my students families, I am encouraged by their attitude and perspective on this school year. Preschool is not mandatory, but these families are determined to work as partners in ensuring their children receive quality early education and therapeutic services.

It will be a challenge, for sure, but my families have inspired me to take on the challenges of this year and make it the best it can be. I have always valued my relationship with students and families and I believe this year will require more interactions with families that will make that relationship even stronger.
