Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Like many other schools around the country, my school was closed till the end of year because of the pandemic. Students and teachers had to adjust to this new learning style in a blink of an eye. Students didn't take materials home and teachers expected to be back to pick up supplies and other teaching materials but that was not the case. Students are working from home with devices either supplied by the school or one that they have at home already which in some cases are old or broken. Teachers like myself made their dining room the new home classroom and work from any device in the household,

Our school is located in a low-economic neighborhood where about 90% of the students receive free or reduced-price lunch.

Many come from broken homes that have been separated because of their dream to come to the United States or because of natural disasters. Some of the students in my school suffer from Attention Deficit Disorder (ADHD), are ESL students (English as a Second Language), and/or have other types of special needs. Regardless of their challenges, though, the majority of the students are very determined and eager to succeed.

My Project

Having a state-of-the art, touch-screen computer to work from home will give me fast and easy access to different programs to share with my students. Through various platforms students will be able to experience videos and power-point presentations with high-quality graphics. It will also allow me to record myself reading books for media purposes. This will be a way for students to have that connection that they are missing at this time.

Once at school the computer will be used by the school's Media Production Team to create power point and connect with school media for morning broadcast presentations.

It will also give students an exciting opportunity to do research, engage in graphic projects, access e-books and use educational programs provided by our school.

The use of such a computer will provide students with an opportunity to actively engage in their learning in a fun interactive way.

By engaging in activities that incorporate the use of the computer, students will be more motivated and will be empowered to work independently toward achieving their individual goals. The use of the computer also provides opportunities for students to engage in more self-directed learning in tune with their particular learning style.
