My Students

My students are driven, eager to succeed, asking questions and contributing to our classroom community however they can. I want to do the same for them. They are young, and need lots of support in their educational journey. Many of their parents are working full-time, and they rely on me to support their learning.

Help my students' receive quality live support for their distance learning, and recorded lessons with digital manipulatives to support understanding of key concepts.

When the shelter in place happened, we were given about 3 hours notice to grab what we needed for three weeks, believing that instruction would not occur. Textbooks and teacher's guides, manipulatives and lesson books, document cameras and devices are still in the classroom, which we cannot access. All learning is occuring online. I now teaching math without manipulatives that support understanding, and without a virtual pen and paper to walk students through problems, break down and annotate texts, etc. I would love to bring familiar tools and learning methods that we use in the classroom back into their learning experience.

My Project

My house (my new classroom) is not equipped with classroom tools, but that won't stop me or my students! An ipad and pencil can make these tools virtually available to my students and will allow me to teach from home in a variety of ways. There are apps that allow me to use virtual manipulatives like the real ones we have in class to teach math lessons, live and recorded. This greatly supports student understanding. And these devices can also be used as a virtual whiteboard where I can annotate difficult texts, recording notes that I can share on Google Classroom, allow me to solve problems live with my student in Webex meetings, walk students step-by-step through processes in small groups, and more. I can save notes for students that are unable to connect live, and access special features of collaborative apps that allow students to interact with the learning from their own devices at any time.

And the learning won't stop when the shelter in place does!

I want a current model of the ipad so that it will last for years to come. In class, it can be used as an interactive whiteboard - this time where students can annotate problems and record their thought processes. This greatly increases student engagement, and allows them the opportunity to explain their thinking, practicing important listening and speaking skills. When connected to our apple TV, the whole class can contribute and take turns solving a problem. The camera can be used to showcase student work and allow others to give feedback, and can even let them record projects to present to the class. Students love to have their work showcased on the big screen!
