I teach preschool aged students with a range of abilities. Some of their learning challenges include autism, speech and language impairment, cognitive delays, and other medical or physical challenges. Students spend up to 3 years in our program, receiving various therapies related to their individual needs. We are the only facility of our kind dedicated to early childhood special education in the community.
Our program emphasizes social-emotional growth, adaptive skills, academic readiness and communication.
We use evidence based practices and strategies to meet the unique needs of our students. Our classrooms are rich with language and play opportunities from song and dance to sensory and artistic exploration.
My Project
My early childhood special education students require hands-on, developmentally appropriate materials in order to engage in distance learning during the COVID-19 school closure. These materials will provide learning opportunities for all areas of development.
Where other students are able to access online and other digital media engagement, my students require toys, visuals, manipulatives and material experience in order to learn.
Flashcards and Play-Doh will allow students to explore letter knowledge, phonology, fine motor and visual motor skills. Bubbles will address oral and gross motor skills. Visual timers will give parents a concrete tool to address emotional and behavioral skills in their home. These materials will be utilized individually, as well as together, to bring developmentally appropriate learning into the home while school remains closed.
As the instructor, I will provide guided lesson plans that students and families can follow in order to address the legal obligations of students' Individualized Education Plans. By providing these material kits to students, I am able to guarantee equitable learning experiences for all of my students, regardless of skill, and create individual lessons to meet their needs.
