Help me give my students a goody bag full of the things they will need to be successful with distance learning: earbuds, dry erase boards and markers, pencils, and composition notebooks.
I teach English in a large urban middle school near a military base. Our entire school population receives free breakfast and lunch. The majority of my students are Black and Brown girls and boys, but I also teach a large population of ESL students. Each year, I have pupils from countries such as Vietnam, Phillippines, China, Afghanistan, Syria, Egypt, Honduras, and Mexico. We are truly a small global village.
For many of my kids, life is a daily struggle, both in and out of school.
They have lost family members, neighbors, and friends to gang violence. They have friends and/or family members who have been incarcerated. Some have parents working two or three jobs just to get by. Some have parents who are learning English right alongside their children. Many have only one parent at home, and some are being raised by someone other than a parent. Merely coming to school on time every day, ready to learn, is a victory.
While they can be challenging, they also are amazing and bring a smile to my face every day. I want nothing but the best for them and I will go to great lengths to provide n
My Project
When most schools closed last March, including mine, we had no idea how long we would be gone. So when education went virtual for the remainder of the year, both teachers and students were left without many of the items essential to quality learning.
For distance learning to be successful, we need to replicate the conditions of the regular classroom as much as possible.
However, this goes far beyond simply having daily virtual meetings and synchronous learning opportunities. This also means that my students will need to have many of the items at home that we would normally use in school. Effective home learning includes earbuds so they can listen to their videos and lessons without disrupting their families OR worrying about background noise. Successful virtual lessons will be more effective when each student having his or her own whiteboard and marker that they can continue to use even once schools are open again. Finally, it means taking the pressure off our hardworking and financially struggling parents by providing essential supplies such as a notebook and pencils.
