Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Pre-Kindergarten is an exciting group of children aged 3-5 who have been diagnosed with developmental disabilities, primarily autism spectrum disorder, and speech/language disorders. Each of my students is unique, and they display a wide variety of interests and abilities. My students are learning the social, language, behavioral and academic skills they will need to become independent learners in the future. My students love to play with toys, build puzzles, play outside, learn new games, and dance to the songs.
In this class, we work daily to build the social, language, behavioral, and academic skills that each child needs to become independent learners.
We are part of a Title I public school that celebrates inclusion and diversity. I teach in a wing with two other Pre-Kindergarten classes, one containing students with less severe developmental disabilities and one containing non-disabled students. Students in these three classrooms interact daily to strengthen every child's social skills. As my students make gains, they begin to try spending more time with typically developing peers. We focus on building relationships, staying with the group, following directions, and increasing self-control.
My Project
We are all struggling to function in this "new normal" our nation faces as we socially distance to stay healthy. Distance Learning has become part of the daily routine for teachers and students everywhere. Our state has determined that distance learning will continue throughout the rest of this school year, including the extra months for "Extended School Year" that children with special needs typically require.
Due to the nature of their disabilities and learning styles, the young children in my classroom pose a unique challenge for parents during this time of long term distance learning.
The hurdle we face as their educational support team and parents is to keep these young learners actively engaged in learning activities that stimulate language development, engagement and independence. Good books can help fill this void.
Because we are a Title I school, many of the children in my classroom come from households without the financial resources to provide a wide variety of high quality books at home for their children. During the first month of our school shutdown, I distributed some books I was able to gather from friends and family to my students' homes. As our distance learning continues, they need more! Please help me give my young students some more books to read at home so they can continue to learn and grow for the rest of this school year, and during the summer months.
