We are a small, urban school with just under 300 students and 10 teachers. Our school demographics are 13.2% Black or African American, 17% Asian, 8% Filipino, 52.1% Hispanic or Latino, 0.7% Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, 7.6% White, 1.4% two or more races, and 58.3% socioeconomically disadvantaged.
Many of our students are first-generation Americans or even recent immigrants and many are first-generation college students.
We are a concurrent enrollment program, so all of our students are both high school and college students. Over half of our students earn an associate's degree along with their high school diploma. We are opening doors to access and opportunity for many under-served students in our district.
My Project
Since Covid-19 shut everything down, our district has been taught entirely through Distance Learning, so I now share an office with my husband as we are both working from home. Therefore, I am constantly competing against my husband to be heard. As we both use the office for work, and we both talk a lot as requirements of our jobs, it has become evident that I need noise-canceling headphones with a microphone so I can hear my students (rather than my husband) and my students can hear me.

I have, and I can attest to the importance of finding some peace and quiet for productivity's sake. I am an English teacher, so I require being able to concentrate, think analytically, and pay attention to detail when grading papers and writing tests. I need a quiet environment to be able to effectively do this. These headphones will help me to tune out the rest of the world and focus on the task at hand. This will be very useful when working from home and when I return to the hustle and bustle of campus life with all of its noise and commotion.
In addition to headphones, I also need additional hard drives and a web camera. External hard drives are susceptible to failure. In the past, I have lost data because I did not have a secondary backup. To prevent this from happening to school data, I need to be able to back up data on a secondary device to avoid data loss and so I don't have to use up my personal hard drive space for school data. I need a camera to improve my students' Zoom experience.
