Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In our elementary public school ABA program, we have 12 amazing students with autism who love school. Our students in the K-2 and 3-5 self-contained classrooms are energetic, caring and very curious! The school closure due to the pandemic has been difficult for them. Our students need consistent routine and structure. Adapting to change is something that most of our students have trouble with. During this unpredictable time in their lives, they are in need of extra supports to get them through it. In September, we want to provide resources for our students to prepare/support them during hybrid in-person and remote learning.
My Project
Since March 2020, our students (much like the rest of the world) were forced to learn and work from home. Their daily school routine and structure were turned upside down. Our students already have difficulty adjusting to the everyday changes of life. In addition, this pandemic has separated our students from what they are familiar with and know.
A typical day in our ABA classrooms, students use various visual and behavioral supports, such as a full-day schedule, choice menu, token boards, first-then boards, social stories and etc.
Why are visual supports so important to our students? They provide structure and routine, encourage independence, build confidence, improve understanding, avoid frustration and anxiety, and also provide opportunities to interact with others. In September, we will need to create multiple visual supports for each student to use at home for virtual learning, as well as separate supports to keep in school for when they return for their hybrid sessions.
