Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The unexpected coronavirus pandemic put our low-income students in a plane they were not ready to ride. Our students are facing multiple challenges including the lack of basic school resources and technological devices in their homes. Our learners are struggling to keep up with the learning expectations from their teachers in their crowded and noisy home spaces-making it more difficult for them to follow a recommended school schedule from home. Overwhelmed with the undesirable distance learning experiences, our students' home conditions demonstrate how unprepared our families are to face the reality of long-term remote learning.
The younger students in pre-kinder through first grade have no tech devices to do video conferencing with their teachers, and the low-income families have insufficient financial assets to meet the unexpected demands.
In sum, many of our students have not connected with their teachers online, as they are still figuring out how to navigate these unfamiliar virtual platforms.
Despite these difficult challenges, our students and their families are doing everything they can to learn and stay safe. They are entrusting their teachers to support them as they set up a conducive learning environment from home.
My Project
The global outbreak of the COVID-19 (coronavirus disease) has placed me in an uncharted learning territory I was not ready for. I am currently in the midst of learning numerous online resources, and I do not have the basic tools to make learning more accessible to my learners.
As I transition into a long-term, remote home teaching environment, I need some basic tools to keep the learning going without my constant, daily obstacles.
I need an LED table desk lamp that I can place behind my computer so that when I video conference with my students and teaching staff, I can have the appropriate adjustable lighting on my face and desktop. Unfortunately, I have a very dark teaching space in my home (with no natural lighting) which is impeding my learners to see me clearly as I Zoom with them. I need to make sure they have clear and adjustable LED visibility, especially when I start my small group reading instruction with our struggling readers. In addition, I need the AirPods to silence all the constant online discussions from my family members who are also studying and working from home. I need to stay focused on what is the most important audience-my learners. Lastly, I am currently facing a disturbing challenge when navigating and selecting essential videos and literacy assignments for my Google Classrooms. I need a stylus pen to move effortlessly across my iPad and teach the students how to write on their own devices using the tool features I model for them.
The requested resources will help facilitate student and teacher capacity. As a move into lesson planning design and more advanced distance learning and teaching district expectations, I need to make sure I have the essentials of Distance Learning 1.0. Thanks for your help and generous donations!
