Wainwright is located along a wave-eroded coastal bluff on the west side of a narrow peninsula which separates Wainwright Inlet from the Chukchi Sea. Wainwright is 72 air miles southwest of Utqiagvik. Wainwright is the third largest village in the North Slope Borough, with a population of about 557. Ninety percent of the residents are Iñupiat. Wainwright’s subsistence hunting is based primarily on whales and caribou. Local arts and crafts include carved ivory figurines and jewelry, baleen boats, whalebone carvings, clocks, knitted caps, and gloves.
The K-12 school campus I teach at provides a strong sense of community where teachers know all of the children and families.
Many of the children have been in classes together since pre-school, creating many sibling-like relationships. They both support and challenge each other every day.
My Project
Our school community is experiencing a spike in COVID cases, so students are learning at home with their families. Since we live in a rural, remote area, the students do not have school supplies available in the community. Everything has to be flown in and ordered online. The products I have selected are basic supplies to provide students the means to complete their assignments and earn the credits they need to graduate. Since most families here do not have internet access, they need to complete their work with paper and pens/pencils.
