Help me give my students supplies that will assist them with distance learning across all subject areas, like whiteboards, and workbooks and chapter books that will carry their independent learning through the summer into third grade.
My class is filled with 23 smart, curious, compassionate, hard-working students, each with individual strengths and passions. My students have shown incredible growth this year in the areas of reading and math. I've had a few students grow two entire grade levels from fall to winter, sheerly because they've connected with the material and the methods in my second grade classroom.
Covid-19 is challenging that growth in so many ways.
Whether it be access to materials or technology, adult support, or motivation/engagement, distance learning is challenging even for the most driven students. Students are so used to activities that reflect their individual learning styles during the school day, varied teaching methods, and collaborating with peers to promote engagement and differentiate for their unique needs. Help me continue to foster this love of learning and keep them excited about school!
My Project
Providing my students with these materials will help promote equity amongst learners, no matter what their distance learning setting looks like. The materials will help them engage with current content, as well as ensure they have bridging materials to third grade throughout the summer.
Students will use whiteboards to work alongside our lesson videos in every subject area.
It will also provide them with a material that allows them to show what they're learning in videos they create and send back to their peers and teachers, as not all students have notebooks and writing utensils. They'll be able to continue to use the whiteboards in future distance learning scenarios, as well as for homework in all grades.
The workbooks, chapter books, and flash cards were chosen specifically with each student in mind. It will provide them differentiated access to second and third grade content and routines during distance learning and continue through the summer to prevent summer learning loss. While not as flashy as other learning methods, workbooks, chapter books and flash cards are learning materials/methods that students can and will use independently. With many families changing/losing jobs or experiencing loss of a stable home, these materials may not be accessible to students without this project.
