My Students

Our school often appears on lists of the most diverse schools in California. Some of our students come from reasonably affluent neighborhoods with professional parents. The majority, however, come from poor neighborhoods with parents who may or may not be involved. A lot of my students have problems staying focused for long periods of time, and being on a block schedule, our classes run ninety minutes. I find it really important to try to incorporate as many lab activities as possible to give them hands-on learning experiences.

My Project

When I started teaching, one thing that I repeatedly heard from parents at Back to School Nights was that the one thing they remembered from high school biology was dissecting a frog. At that time, we were not doing dissections in our department. I decided to add this to our curriculum, and ten years ago we started doing frog dissections in our department.

The highlight of biology class for our students is the frog dissection.

They start asking about it on day one of the class. I explain that they have to learn about the human body first, and then they can appreciate seeing all of the structures in a frog.

Our district is currently having a severe budget deficit, and we are expecting zero funds for lab supplies. I would love to be able to provide our current students with this experience which for many, will be once in a lifetime.
