My amazing 5th graders come from a very diverse background where 87% of our students have free or reduced-price lunch. I have a large number of special education students mainstreamed into my classroom. My classroom speaks more than seven different languages and some of them face hunger and homelessness, but they have the GRIT and do not give up!
My classroom with special education students and English language students are eager to learn and experience new things, and they love reading, math and STEM.
A majority of my students enter the classroom without school materials, where I must then provide them. Many of them wear the same hoodie to school every day because they do not have another. It's amazing to see them succeed once they feel safe and secure in school. Even as fifth-graders, they approach me for daily hugs or additional ones if they are in crisis. I look at my class as my family and once they feel and believe it, the learning can really begin. There isn't anything I would not do to help them.
My Project
All students have the right to learn and be successful. However, some students need more help to make that happen. My special needs students and English learners need specific tools that can aid them in the classroom. We are in need of dual-sided dry erase whiteboards to show our work. One side of these dry erase whiteboards is lined to help students write words on. The other side is blank to use for math. We need markers and erasers that are durable and long-lasting.
Magnetic dry-erase whiteboards will allow students to use manipulatives in math, and can also let them write down their answers and thought process.
These materials are necessary because students with autism and learning disabilities will be able to participate with the entire class because these aids make it easier to express their thinking and the manipulatives will stay on the boards.
