My students are the best! I teach at a low socioeconomic, inner-city, Title I school, in Las Vegas, NV. 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. Many of the students are English language learners (ELL), with English being their second language. My school is made up of children from around the world including Ethiopia, the Philippines, Mexico, Puerto Rico, the Middle East, and the United States.
With project-based learning & hands-on activities, my students are encouraged to be critical thinkers, problem solvers, and risk-takers.
I work with third, fourth, and fifth-grade students who have been identified as Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) students. My students love learning and need extra challenges at school to keep them engaged in the curriculum.
My Project
This year, my students are designing a new land for Disneyland. To go along with this project I am taking my students to Disneyland. The purpose of our one day trip is to participate in Disney’s Youth Education Series tour, “Designing a Disney Story.” I am trying to get funding to cover the cost of my students’ tickets. This Donors Choose proposal is for 10 tickets.
By participating in this field trip, students will discover how Disney animators create full-length animated features.
Students will learn the history of the art form, develop storytelling skills and practice techniques used to bring animated characters to life.
Here is a description of the “Designing a Disney Story” tour from the Disney website:
Learn about the complex components that work together to bring favorite Disney characters and stories to the big screen. In this 3-hour program students will study Disney's role in the history and processes used to create early animated features, as well as the innovative animation techniques used to bring the vision of modern storytellers to life. Students will explore their own storytelling skills by planning and designing a storyboard and creating a kineograph.
