Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Was there ever a time you couldn't quite find the "right" words to convey your thoughts? My students are faced with that challenge everyday. They are physically and cognitively impaired and many are unable to use oral language as a means of expressing themselves.
My students have various moderate to severe disabilities.
They are first, second, and third graders in a California public school not far from Disney. They are enrolled in a special day class to meet their unique learning needs. Differentiating instruction through the integration of visual and performing arts in the classroom helps to bridge the gap between curriculum and their special needs.
My Project
Most of the students in my class lack the ability to use language as a means of expressing themselves. The materials supplied by the generous funding of this grant will help my students work on VAPA standards for Music, Theatre, and Visual Arts. Painting (Visual Arts) provides students with opportunities for communication and expression through original works of art. The puppet theater (Theatre) will provide opportunities for my students to practice the fine art of storytelling by recreating situations in familiar settings. Likewise, the class set of musical instruments (Music) will provide yet another means for the creative expression of my students by their performing and participating in music. My students will be afforded countless opportunities throughout the year to use the music and art supplies purchased with the Disneyland Create grant!
Not only do all of my students have moderate to severe disabilities, but most are from low socio-economic households and rarely if ever, have opportunities to participate in activities that require high quality materials such as painting, the playing of musical instruments, and theater.
These quality visual and performing arts materials will give my students multiple opportunities to express themselves while bringing pride to their families and community as well.
