Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have had the joy and privilege of teaching in a Spanish Dual Immersion Program for six years. These years have all been spent in Kindergarten. My students ages range from 5-6 with most of them not having any school experiences before Kindergarten. They come from diverse backgrounds, with many coming from Spanish-speaking households and low socioeconomic backgrounds. Some students also speak English at home, and this is their first time learning in Spanish.
In our program, Kindergartners spend 90% of their day in Spanish and 10% in English.
I am their teacher for the Spanish part. They learn all their core subjects (math, science, reading etc.) in Spanish. Our program goes all the way to 12th grade, with their English learning time growing in percentage each year. This is a great opportunity for all my students to gain academic proficiency in English and Spanish. I'm always amazed at their ability to read, write, and speak in both languages as they get older.
My Project
Science and social studies are often forgotten when it comes to content areas and standards.
Animals are a natural interest for this age group and they love to learn about their habitats, diets, predators, and adaptations.
I want to be able to give my students the opportunity to learn about life science and animals with hands on artifacts that they can hold and inspect. These materials will be used in small groups so that each child will get a turn. Normally I will run a station with a parent volunteer running another. The other two table groups will work on independent activities.
The most expensive, and by far the most important item I am requesting, are the Hands-On Science Specimen Centers. These will be an integral part of their discovery because they will be able to look at the specimens up close. Thank you so much for your help with this project!
