Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at an inner-city school that serves a high population of minority students. In my district, we are very passionate about providing our students with the best opportunities available.
84% of our students come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
I have students who are first and second generation Americans.
I have students who will be the first in their families to go to college.
I have students who have fought through and dominated the English language.
I have students who speak and breathe art.
My students are faced with obstacles inside and outside the classroom, but they continue moving forward with a sense of determination and resiliency.
My Project
We are currently in need of a classroom library.
It is my hope that this will encourage my students to read more, and in doing so, will help them become stronger readers and writers.
Not only will these books expose my students to a variety of experiences and genres, but they will also help them discover the joys of reading. At the moment, my students do not have a lot of choice in what they read. However, once we have a classroom library, I will be able to implement silent sustained reading and literature circles into our classroom sessions. I truly believe that this will benefit and empower my struggling students while also pushing my advanced students forward.
