Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Many of my students come from tough family situations but they are a group of amazingly smart and inquisitive fifth graders willing to learn.
Our school is considered high poverty with over ninety percent of our students qualifying for free or reduced priced meals.
However, that does not tell the picture of what my students are capable of. They are bright, knowledgeable, bilingual, and determined to have successful academic futures. And they work together very hard to achieve it! If you could meet them, you would say they are OUTSTANDING.
My Project
Help me to give my students exceptional and thrilling texts in a wide range of genres, including informational and narrative nonfiction, original fiction and drama. With the articles in Storyworks, Scope, or Ahora, Spanish, they will discover the world around!
These magazines will continue to enhance the print-rich classroom that I strive to create.
My classroom library is a place that my students really enjoy-I read aloud to them, they read in pairs, and they read independently! Every book that is placed in my library is treated with love and care, and my students are thankful for the opportunities to read. However, we are missing one of the most important genres in American literature, SHORT STORIES, and we need them!
All of these magazines have been chosen with my students in mind. I have watched them the past few weeks of school, I have read articles just like these, and they are looking forward to having the chance to choose the articles they want to read directly from the magazine, without waiting for the teacher to read it aloud.
The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books will continue to help my students grow stronger in reading. My students already have an astonishing interest in independent reading, and this project will only help enrich their experiences with the printed word.
