Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
For many of my students, this is their first year in school and they have missed out on much of the free exploration that occurs in preschool. With increasing pressure for kindergarten to perform in math and literacy, science is often pushed to the side. Well in my classroom, we are pushing back!
I teach kindergarten in a low income community on the west side of Indy with a predominately Spanish speaking population.
My students are bright and eager to learn, and they are so curious about the world around them. They never let the language barrier hold them back.
My Project
We will use these materials to open a free choice science discovery center to be used with small groups throughout the week. The center with magnifying glasses, magnets, bug catchers, microscopes, balances, binoculars, and leveled science readers will guide students to spark their curiosity and explore the natural and physical world. They will learn how to make observations, inferences, and design investigations to answer their own (never ending) questions.
My goal in creating this science discovery center is to open my students' eyes to a whole new world from the minute hairs on a bumblebee's back to the intricate patterns of a seashell.
Down with worksheets! Science is a verb in our classroom.
