Aloha from na keiki o Hawai'i. My preschool special education class provides early intervention services to qualifying special needs children with a range of disabling conditions, ages 3 to 5 years. My school is located in a predominantly rural, low-income neighborhood with a considerable portion of the children of Hawaiian and/or Pacific Island ancestry.
Our classroom cheer sums it up: "You too, we too, we all love preschool!" We are a group of actively involved adults-teacher, aide, and therapists, and children working together in our hands-on learning environment.
My Project
If "play is the work of childhood" (Jean Piaget) then it's time for us to go to "work" and have some fun at the Children's Discovery Center. The Children's Discovery Center is a wonderful place designed for young children where sharing and exploring and using all their senses is encouraged and practiced.
It's not easy being a parent, and being a parent of a child with special needs and limited communication often adds challenges and complexities.
My families need some fun time together. However, the admission for a family adds up, and if I don’t take them they would likely never go. With your help, my students, their younger siblings, and parents will be treated to a day of hands-on play and active engagement. I'm also requesting assistance with the bus fares as we ride the city bus to get to the Children's Discovery Center.
