Discovering Dinosaurs and Learning to Dig the Science of Paleontology

My Project

Kids love dinosaurs! And teaching about dinosaurs is a great way to foster a love of science, history, geography, geology and even art. My project will help focus the students' interests on dinosaurs and the field of paleontology. We will begin by reading and completing activities with the "Magic Tree House: Dinosaurs Before Dark" chapter book. Then to tie in their new discoveries from the book, students will complete several interactive, hands-on lessons. First, they will complete a mini paleo dig with a special "rock" to find a dino surprise inside. Then they will use those dinosaurs and modeling clay to learn how to make imprints and casts of "fossils" like real scientists in the field. Finally, students will use the knowledge they've gained to paint a dinosaur model based on what they've discovered about prehistoric habitats and modern-day animals.
