Help me give my students plaster strips, foam boards, paint, and brushes to create a three-dimensional mold of their own hand and paint cultural henna designs of their choice on their hand sculptures.
Welcome to Ms K's sculpture class! In our class we learn to carve, create, and sculpt many different materials and textures. Students are never bored and are always excited to create original artwork. When the clean up bell rings, I have to go around and force students to stop working because they are so interested and focused in their work. Since we live in Los Angeles area, I have a very diverse group of students in my classroom, and we all learn so much from one another. Around half of the class consists of seniors because their schedule is more free to take elective classes. By the time these students are able to take sculpture, they are very eager to start learning and experiencing 3D art. It is also great to have many 12th graders in the class because younger students get to interact with the older students, and a wonderful environment is created!
My Project
My students need plaster strips, foam boards, paint, and brushes to create a three-dimensional mold of their own hand and paint cultural henna designs of their choice on their hand sculptures.
Students will learn about henna, a multi-branched flowering plant that also produces a dye for skin, hair, fingernails, and fabric, the origin of it, and its uses.
Additionally, they will learn about other cultures and how henna designs defer in various cultures such as Indian, Arabic, Pakistani, Persian, and North African cultures. They will then apply what they have learned to create a cast of their own hand (working in partners and switching roles) and creating a henna design influenced by the culture of their choice to apply on their sculpture (using tempera paint) to express what they have learned about the design in 3D.
