Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are a community of learners who are excited about the opportunity to learn new concepts. They enjoy all of their new experiences with the infusion of technology and science in our classroom. With the Next Generation Science Standards, students study phenomena as a scientist. They are curious and motivated to learn more about the world around them.
I believe that this curiosity to learn will create a passion that will lead them to become lifelong learners.
My STEAM Makerspace allows students to explore STEAM concepts during class and on their own time. My students and students from other classes take the initiative to come in before school and during morning recess to take advantage of extra opportunities to learn.
My students made a presentation to our PTA on robots! They helped parents learn to code during Open House. They hosted coding sessions where entire classes in first through fifth grade learned to code. Next month, they will assist in instructing teachers how to code robots. Students have also offered to return next year to teach incoming 4th graders how to code. They truly have developed a passion for teaching others to code!
My Project
I started my STEAM Makerspace in January of this year with the help of the generous DonorsChoose.org community. It quickly expanded and is now open for all students fourth through sixth grade. I open my class before school and at recess for students who would like to explore science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics. Students have particularly enjoyed learning to code robots. I would like to infuse more art into my Makerspace. The Sketch Kit will transform the Dash robot into a drawing tool that will allow each student to demonstrate their artistic ability.
My goal is to encourage students to express their creativity by imagining a creation, coding the robot, and seeing Dash bring their creation to life.
I am excited to add more opportunities for my students to use the robots to not only code but also to be creative!
