My students need scholastic magazines to read nonfiction text that is both current and relevant to their lives. Students need the “I Can Do” science kits to get hands on science experiences in our discovery center.
I teach kindergarten in an urban school system. My building is a Pre K-8 building that is home to approximately 1200 students. All students in our building receive free breakfast and lunch, as many of our families face financial hardships. In addition to a large student population, our school has a highly supportive administration team and is filled with motivated, hard working staff, who are dedicated to helping each child achieve academic success.
My students are creative and have inquiring minds.
They all enter at various academic levels but are eager to share experiences and learn from one another. I love being able to foster that desire to learn in each one!
My Project
Short texts are an important component of shared reading in our literacy collaborative classroom. The Scholastic magazines are authentic texts that will be perfect for mini-lessons and classroom discussion.
Introducing my students to these types of texts will prove to be an invaluable component to their learning.
Until students are able to read independently, they can follow along as the teacher reads the text. They can turn and talk with classmates about the topic at hand. After reading the text for understanding, students can search for specific letters or high frequency words. The students will be able to use their individual magazine as a resource in their book box. They will also have the opportunity to take them home and use to retell what they learned.
The "I Can Do" science kits will be rotated at our discovery center. Having these materials on hand will give students the opportunity to work collaboratively with peers to conduct simple science investigations that promote curiosity and build problem solving skills.
