I teach a wonderful class of autistic children grades 3-5 in a public elementary school, which has grades Pre-K to 5. My class last year was comprised of 5 students, 4 of which will be returning to my classroom next school year.
For three of the four returning students, spelling is a challenge for them because they struggle to break down words phonetically in order to spell them. All four students struggle with creative writing and the basics of writing. They need to be reminded to write in the correct verb tense and to include nouns and verbs in each sentence that they write.
This year, to aid with spelling skills, I plan to implement the Wilson Fundations Reading program, which is a systematic, phonics-based program, which has the students write words and sentences as part of the program. As part of the Fundations program, I am in need of a pocket chart to display phonetic sounds and words in. To supplement this program, I am in need of more materials that teach the students skills for writing sentences.
For my student who doesn't have a problem with spelling or formulating sentences, I need resources that will help expand her creative writing skills. She will write two or three sentences when given a story prompt and has an incredibly hard time elaborating on her writing. To better serve her, I need more resources to pull from for more writing prompts and resources to build her writing skills.
The materials on my materials list directly relate to skills that each of my returning students has trouble acquiring. Each material will be used with at least one of my students and more than likely more than one. The materials are reusable and can be used with future students as well.
