Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My first grade classroom is full of cooperative learning and meaningful fun! Hands-on inquiry-based activities that allow for creativity keep my first graders engaged in science and social studies. My students will see themselves as scientists, inventors and innovators before the year is through.
90% of my inquisitive first graders are economically disadvantaged.
Over 50% of my students are English Language Learners. 25% of students in my homeroom have special needs, including autism and speech. They like to move, create, and be inspired by the world around them. As in most classrooms, some are shy, but all are gifted in some way. As their teacher, it is just a matter of finding out how they learn best. So, whether they are visual, auditory or kinesthetic learners, they will find their needs met and an outlet for the creativity in my classroom.
My Project
With Play-Doh modeling clay and modeling tools, my students will create dioramas in social studies and science class. We will also make models of animal habitats, the solar system, insects, and our community/neighborhood. We design robots and other technology that make our world better. We plan and execute experiments, such as challenges to make objects sink or float that don't normally sink or float. Students discover surface tension and learn that they can float objects in a boat made of modeling clay. There is no end to the projects and learning that happen with play-doh in my classroom. My special needs students spend more time involved in and focused on the learning activities when they are engaged and exploring along with their peers. My English Language Learners get to spend more time developing their oral language skills during these projects. All of my students get to develop their talents and gifts with these hands on activities.
Making a difference does not just mean making gains on standardized tests.
We need to develop skills that will help students be successful in real life situations. They must see that we are all scientists, inventors and innovators. These are not just people we read about in textbooks. We can all do great things and change the world when we put our minds to it. I hope my students will walk away with more confidence and the desire to explore and inquire about the world around them.
