This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school is in Ohio. We service many children from low-income families who are on free and reduced-price lunch. We have a brand new school building, which is very exciting. The school has many technologically-advanced conveniences and resources to support our IB curriculum. The students in my classroom are all on free and reduced-lunch program. They are African American with a large percentage of single parent households.
My students are eager readers.
I have taught for 28 years and have an abundance of nonfiction reading materials. I have organized these titles into our 6 IB Transdisciplinary Units. The GAR Foundation of Akron Ohio have provided the funds for my students to travel to the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. These are at a second grade reading level with beautiful pictures.
I would like to have a whole group set of a title to prepare for this trip on both dinosaurs and fossils. These titles would be an excellent resource, and once again, with the mobile library, can be accessed for all second grades.
My Project
My students have been the lucky recipients of the GAR Foundation of Akron Ohio's grant to send them to the Cleveland Museum of Natural History each year. This was the first year of the grant. Once I did the trip, I thought about how it might be more impactful if I had some titles for them to read as a whole group reading lesson.
The students were so involved and excited at what they saw on their field trip that they returned want to learn more of the topic.
I would like to provide booksets as opposed to constant research on the computers.
