Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
It happens as a daily occurrence, he walks up to me and quietly wraps his tiny arms around my body in a warm embrace. He is craving love and attention and knows that in my classroom hugs are always welcome. At our facility many of the children come from low-income and extremely difficult home environments and all of them have one thing in common, they come from single parent homes with working mothers who are also full time students.
We are essentially their last opportunity for a foundational education before they enter Kindergarten.
We take that responsibility to heart. While they are with us in that classroom they learn about science, math, enhance their cognitive, social, and emotional development and most importantly they are loved.
My Project
Imagination and pretend play are foundational for fostering creativity and problem solving skills. When children are given the opportunity to create their own world, it allows them to think flexibly, coordinate, cooperate and learn life skills.
This Kitchen Playset will provide the children with a concrete area to create their own imaginative world while also learning healthy ways to prepare meals to prevent life threatening illnesses such as obesity and diabetes.
They will be able to pretend to cook, wash dishes, stock the refrigerator and organize their groceries. The children will feel accomplished as they pretend to fix a home cooked meal and interact with their friends. This interaction will build communication and social skills for the children as well.
