Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
100% of my 60 students are newly-arrived immigrants and refugees. They hail from countries such as Somalia, Syria, Turkey, Armenia, Eritrea, Vietnam, Sudan, Morocco, Bangladesh, Cape Verde, DR Congo, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Guatemala, Honduras, and more. My students lack sufficient financial resources. 100% of students qualify for free breakfast, lunch, and snacks. More than 50% of my students have received little or no schooling in their home country or have had their education interrupted by war, migration, famine, or poverty. They are older than average American students, arriving in my 9th grade class around age 18. They have insufficient time in school to acquire English and master content classes as the cut off age is 22. My students are resilient, determined, community-oriented, empathetic, generous, curious, and inventive.
My Project
All of my students struggle to afford appropriate clothing for Boston weather, and pregnant students have even more difficulty. Pregnant students lack access to comfortable and dignified clothing because of financial reasons and because they are separated from family members who would be able to provide hand-me-downs. Female students do not have enough access to feminine hygiene products and less access to proper healthcare.
Pregnant students, especially those who did not choose to become pregnant, need bras, maternity pants, and maternity tops.
Students who feel comfortable, confident, and supported are more likely to be able to focus on their studies, graduate from high school, and obtain employment to support themselves (and their new family members). Pregnant students are more likely to be kicked out of their homes by family members and rejected by local communities. I want to make sure students feel safe, loved, and supported at school.
