Digitization Laboratory (D-LAB) at AHS. Documenting Our History!
Help me give my students opportunities to learn the digitization process and provide our community with a local history repository. Students will research topics in local history, collect and digitize print artifacts, and make materials available to community.
We are a Title I high school of 580 students in a small rural community in Georgetown County, South Carolina. While the vast majority of our population is eligible for free or reduced-priced lunch, this distinction does not limit their personal creativity. This does, however, limit the access to the technology they need to support their creativity. Our students rely on the technology we provide for them at school to produce the artifacts of their creativity. Please help us encourage, support, and promote this creativity.
My Project
The creation of the Digitization Laboratory (D-LAB) will provide our students the opportunity to learn the digitization process and in turn provide our community with a local history repository.
Students will research selected topics in local history, collect print materials to be archived, digitize these materials, and then make these materials available for the community.
While our students are practiced in creating original digital content with ubiquitous handheld devices, they are true novices when it comes to understanding the technology behind these creations and the impact of the “disposal” creation.
The D-LAB will provide opportunities for our students to engage in the project management process from concept to completion. Students will learn to think like historians as they begin the research process and make value decisions on which print resources to digitize. They will learn the concepts of information hierarchies, indexes, and metadata analysis of information as they begin digitization process. Students will engage in the process of determining the best option for digital storage, taking into account such variables as database software, website design, and search engine algorithms.
Once created the D-LAB has the potential to preserve print artifacts that are valuable in documenting our local histories.
