Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have a diverse group of fantastic students. However, the majority of my students come from the public housing system in NYC, along with an increasing number of English Language Learners.
"The greatest natural resource is the minds of our children."- Walt Disney
They are a wonderful group of students who love to explore and learn as well as amaze me on a daily basis. Even though many of them face very harsh realities, they still come in excited to learn and happy to be in school. My students find comfort in the school; for some, it is one of the few constants in life they can count on. Working in a large urban city school with very limited resources, I have learned to be creative when it comes to providing my students with resources.
My Project
My students are in desperate need of a new laptop so they can work in math groups that support their needs. Students tend to recall, understand and apply more when they can see what is happening.
The technology, I currently have in my classroom, often does not support the videos/applications because it is antiquated.
A new laptop will provide me with the ability to place some students in a small group to watch math videos that coincide with the lessons taught. With this laptop, I will have the ability to challenge my top students as well as support my struggling students.
There are fantastic applications, such as iXL, that can support or challenge students in my class; however, I am unable to utilize them due to not having a laptop which is currently up to date. Over fifty percent of my class are English Language Learners; this technology would help me increase their vocabulary and deepen their understandings of difficult concepts by leaps and bounds.
"Math: you should not only know what you are doing. You should know why and how."-unknown. This technology would assist students in understanding the "why" and "how".
