I provide language therapy and communication intervention within a self-contained autism, communication and social skills pre-k program for children aged 3-6. .
Every child deserves the opportunity to communicate, expand their language, and show the world how wonderful individual and unique they are.
My students are primarily non-verbal and emerging verbal, and we work every day to improve their ability to communicate. These wonderful students learn through sensory and hands-on experiences, and many demonstrate their knowledge through augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). Right now we are struggling with the coronavirus pandemic to engage and support our earliest learners and their families in the home. Parents keep asking for supports like we use or have created in the past to help them encourage their children to participate at home. At school they rarely see a screen and instead use physical and hands on support to learn. The Teachers Pay Teachers cards provided here will support children to continue learning in a similar fashion as to before the pandemic began.
My Project
Connecting and engaging with students via virtual means has become the new normal and we are learning new methods to interact, create manipulatives, and have have hands on involvement. My students are struggling with the screen time required to participate in virtual education when they can't hold or touch a visual to relate it to themselves.
Many of the children in my classroom struggle with object permanence and understanding that a concept exists when they may not be able to see, touch, hear and/or smell.
The materials received from Teachers Pay Teachers will be able to be presented visually but also be able to be printed and turned into physical errorless tasks, file folder games, interactive books, and flash cards that can be manipulated and held. This will support student language growth and carryover. This method will allow me to create lessons that will better support a parent coaching model and provide physical access to materials that can now be sanitized between uses (through laminate project).
