My upper level Japanese students are amazing kids. They are driven, passionate, and deeply interested in the language and culture they have been studying for years.
As students of Japanese, the most valuable thing is to be able to use the language authentically outside of the classroom.
I have many students who are now interested in studying abroad during high school and college, continuing their studies in college, testing their proficiency level formally, or entering into service roles which will utilize the language.
They are all searching for ways in which they can apply their love of the language to their life in and beyond the high school classroom.
My Project
Storytelling is an amazing way for students to expand their language skills and to explore culture in a meaningful way. Podcasting is a relatively new medium, and as such, a relevant medium for teenagers to explore and improve their storytelling skills.
Podcasting offers students a low-barrier entrance into media composition, and gives students the power to become creators in the process of their own education.
We hope to utilize this audio/visual equipment in various student-driven units in the classroom; empowering students to tell stories that impact not only the classroom, but the wider community.
Our first podcast will focus on the local historical issue of Japanese Internment camps in Arizona. We hope to make connections between historical events and the lives impacted by those events in a way that captures the spirit of those who were affected by the camps.
