Every year my second grade students become movie producers and playwrights. We as a class develop a play, write the script, create the backdrops and then produce a movie with the students as both actor and author. This enhanced digital camcorder would make these projects even better.
My students come from a diverse rural and ethnic background.
Our school is a Title I school and we have about 54% of the student body on the free and reduced price lunch program. The classroom has an average of 24 students, the transient rate is at or above 65%. My students get excited about school and their class, especially when I introduce and integrate technology within the daily lessons. The playwright project is a big part of the excitement in the classroom. Everyone gets involved, including the parents.
My Project
All teachers are aware of the technological disadvantage that some students experience within their educational career. The use of this camcorder will negate some of that disadvantage. I try to engage my students by letting them use technology throughout the year, culminating with a project that they get to keep a copy of. This project also gets the community involved by including the parents in the logistical support of the project, especially the costumes and the sustained reading practice of the scripts at home.
My project will allow the students to experience a level of creation and ownership that they may not have a chance to otherwise.
The grins on the faces at the end of the year when we show all the parents and student body the final project is worth every second spent at the camcorder and computer. This new camcorder will ensure that the students' hard work is captured in all its detail and allow their creativity to shine.
