My 6th-grade science classes are part of a public school in a growing suburban town. Middle school students learn more by doing than reading. Science class is the perfect place to make discoveries. As the new national science standards are implemented, the focus is to develop STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) lessons. They love to make connections to real world problems. Instead of hearing "Why do we need to learn this?" I get students who can't wait to do things like forensics or other explorations.
My Project
My students will explore all about matter in the best chemistry location, otherwise known as the kitchen. We will use food to study chemical reactions as well as chemical and physical properties and changes. The digital scales will help make accurate measurements of pancake ingredients before and after cooking to help understand conservation of matter. Another STEM activity has them building windmills and testing the strength of lifting power of the wind. The gram weights will help them test the lifting power. This involves lots of trial and error as they tweak their designs to lift more and more.
You can change their world by helping them to understand the impact on the environment everytime we affect the matter in nature.
