Each day in our classroom is exciting, and I strive to expose my students to new things each day. We talk about the world around us and examine it using digital technology, as well as print resources, in order to understand how we fit in a constantly changing world.
The students in our 6th grade classroom are a lively and energetic group of kids.
They are excited to learn and excited to be here in our 6-8 middle school. The sixth grade program here is a STEAM program, which means the students are doing projects that incorporate science, technology, engineering, art and math in a hands-on environment. They are learning career readiness skills, including creating websites that serve as an e-portfolio, working daily with computers to learn typing and coding skills, and working on designing projects from scratch going through the prototyping process.
Our school is located in a small community. We have a spirited staff and our goals are based on teaching students 21st century skills as well as getting them ready for the rigors of high school. The school is also focused on providing a wide variety of after school activities for students to be involved in including drama club, coding club, math lab, and drama club.
My Project
My students need video and still-picture cameras, as well as 2 microphones to record digital literacy projects. The students in my classroom will be provided with a multitude of opportunities to use the cameras and microphones in this project. We will be using the cameras to record student-written skits and informational news segments during our informational writing unit. The microphones will be used for that purpose as well, but also to create "podcasts" about the activities and accomplishments of our sixth graders.
The video and audio recording tools in this project will provide so many opportunities for the students in my classroom.
They will become familiar with using video and audio technology, as well as gain real life experience with editing and formatting these digital file types. Additionally, they will serve as a source of communication from student to home as the student podcasts will update family and friends on school activities.
