Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are so special to me. As a 5th grade reading teacher, I try to provide many opportunities for reading success and development of independent reading strategies for these hard working students. Many students need specific literacy interventions to close the achievement gap, and others need access to higher level texts to continue stretching their above level reading abilities. All students need access to multiple genres, authors, topics, and levels of books. At our school, we are trying to create a literacy rich environment that provides opportunities throughout the day for independent silent reading with books that students are truly engaging with.
My students live in an inner-city neighborhood in Chicago, and the majority are Hispanic.
The majority of this student population also lives in poverty, and many are first and second generation families of immigrants working hard to achieve the American Dream. The desire is there to learn, grow, and achieve; we just need the resources. I'm hoping we can support the goals my students and their families have through this project.
My Project
The tablets will provide access to thousands of books in the online libraries my students have access to. They will also allow access to the reading intervention programs my students need. It's so fun for students to read when they can access books they are truly interested in. While we have great books in our classroom library, it's fun for students to access reading in a different way as well sometimes!
These tablets also make it possible to curl up in one of our comfy chairs or on the carpet, and really get into reading in a comfortable position rather than at a desk where the computer is.
My students are trying to build stamina as readers, and picking good fit books as well as good reading spots are two ways they are ensuring they can focus and reading for extended periods of time. These tablets support both of those strategies toward building reading stamina!
My students will access online libraries full of wonderful books, many of which they can listen to while they read. This is awesome because many of my students have word accuracy and fluency goals as they are English language learners. Reading while listening is a great strategy for building vocabulary and fluency! Many of my students have specific goals in reading due to some gaps in their reading foundation skills. These tablets will allow more students to access the online reading intervention programs we use regularly in the classroom.
