Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As teachers it is hard to compete with the many distractions that cause our students the inability to focus on academics. From television, to video games, to the advances in technology, our students always pay more interest to the world of mass media.
Most of my students live in low-income, poverty areas.
They attend a Title I school and qualify for free and reduced lunch. Many of my students don't have the means to afford and keep up with materials or products that enrich their education especially those deemed to help with 21st Century skills.
My Project
If our students are to compete using 21st Century skills, then they need to be exposed to the various tools that will allow this. Having students enhance their academics by bringing them things like e-Readers will not only motivate, they will also differentiate learning by allowing them a choice for reading. The Nook will allow me to bring them a variety of reading materials during a time of economic hardship. Students will collaborate during reading centers and have the opportunity to reengage in their learning by bringing them something new and fun and tying it in academically.
Why not take the technology that already interests them and use it in a way that will make learning fun and engaging.
With the e-Reader, students will be targeting the main learning modalities. Auditory learners will engage in teacher and student led read alouds, visual learners will be engaged by its vibrant light and colors, kinesthetic learners will engage in the tactile ability of holding it as well as its multi-touch screen.
