Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have been a general music teacher in a metropolitan school district for 13 years, and for the past 4 years I have been fortunate to teach at a middle school. I am excited to provide students with opportunities to express themselves through music at this challenging and critical age when students have so much potential, creativity, and curiosity.
I am dedicated to teaching and to providing my students with opportunities to create, compose, and improvise on classroom instruments and using technology.
In my general music classes I teach over 320 students a year. Students are in grades 6-8, and range in age from 11-15 years old. Ninety-seven percent of the student population identifies as Hispanic, and ninety-eight percent of the student population is low income. Students participate in musical activities ranging from electronic composition, performing, improvising, and composing on guitars and ukuleles, to world percussion where students learn to play music from the Caribbean and Africa.
My Project
The digital piano and piano stand will be added to centers in the music room. Centers will be created around themes included music technology, music notation, music history, reading, and instruments. The instrument centers can include instruments being learned in class such as ukulele, guitar, and in this project I am expanding it to include the keyboard or electric piano.
In the piano center students will use headphones with the piano and explore music improvisation, composition, and performance in small groups.
Students will learn about the range and dynamics of the piano. Students will have the opportunity to practice musical ensembles in small groups at instrumental centers.
Students will rotate throughout the room to all centers, and will read about musical instruments and genres at the music library. They will practice music notation skills at the literacy center. Students will compose music electronically with ipads. Your donation to this project will add to the instrumental center and pianos.
