Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The digital world of photography and multi-media presentations is where it's at. As an avid photographer I would like to purchase some equipment so my students can take their own pictures and learn how to use these images to create reports, as well as how to include them in word documents and programs such as PowerPoint. I take my students on many weekend adventures such as camping, sea kayaking, river rafting and sledding. I take many photos and the kids get great joy from seeing the photos I take. I would like to take their enthusiasm for pictures and have them start taking their own. They would then use their own images to write about things they learned on the trip, create a digital herbarium, write letters to pen pals and thank you letters (with inserted photos) to people who donate to help fund our trips.
Schools are leaving our kids behind in an ever increasing techno-world. The things we do will help better prepare my students for a world that is becoming more computer-based by the minute. I teach all subjects at fifth grade in a low-socioeconomic school in San Jose. The students I teach are about 75% Latino and 25% Asian. My students are much less prepared than kids from more affluent communities where kids have better access to technology in their homes.
I would like to supply my students with are a digital camera, a color photo printer with extra cartridges and photo paper. My class has 32 students and they will all have access to creating their own projects. I often use “experts” who do a great job in teaching the other students. I spend a lot of my own time after school teaching the “experts” to become skilled in using the tools of technology.
I take my students on weekend adventures where we get into the outdoors and learn about the natural sciences. I want them to photograph their activities and the things they see and use it as springboard to further research while they hone their technology skills by manipulating images while creating documents, presentations, reports and a photo journal of our adventures. In creating these projects my students will gain skills in technology as well as photography. Both of these fields are under-represented by women and minorities. These types of activities can open many opportunities for my students.
