This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am writing this proposal for digital cameras on behalf of a student run newspaper at our charter high school. My students have been engaged in producing a school newspaper, web site and yearbook over the past few years, improving in quality every year. They produced a number of student publications, as well as a culminating yearbook for the past 4 years. To continue and develop this program further we require a few new digital cameras. These cameras will be used for students to practice photojournalism in the context of their work, writing and reporting school events and issues important to the community.
Our school is a small, growing charter high school. We are in our sixth year of growth. Our School serves a low – income, immigrant, urban population. The school is committed to high expectations, social justice and college readiness. I teach the digital media classes, as well as a student newspaper elective class. These classes provide the students the opportunity to learn about a variety of software, such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Dream weaver, Flash, and In Design. My background is in Fine Arts and I incorporate these elements and principles into my course. I also intend to teach the students critical thinking skills in the context of design and journalism. We are in constant need for equipment and resources to maintain and improve the quality we are able to offer the students.
The materials I am requesting in this proposal are 4 digital cameras. The 7 mega pixel gives us a good quality image versatile enough to use for printing and online. These will be used primarily for the student newspaper class to take photos for use in student publications. They are a great tool for the students to use in conjunction with our computers and advancing technology resources. Students from the other technology classes, as well as across the curriculum, will also have access to these cameras for sign out and use in a variety of projects.
These cameras will provide the student population with an opportunity to apply the art of digital technology to a variety of projects. The student newspaper has the potential to be an important voice for the students. Our newspaper and yearbook are an important component in documenting and adding to the culture and community of our school and the surrounding neighborhood. Students will have this publication as a forum to express their concerns, issues, and successes. They will also be able to use this as a way to reach out to the larger community. The cameras requested in this proposal will certainly enhance our growing program and student population.
