Digital Ink in Secondary Math

My students need an interactive tablet (digital ink) to create math graphs and to capture problems and examples worked out in class.

My Students

What would it be like to have well written and clearly explained notes from math class? Everyday we use the whiteboard to solve math problems, create graphs, and explain new math concepts. This works well until the board is erased. With a Mobi tablet, no memory or class example is ever erased.

I teach at a brand new high school in Utah.

My students come from a fast growing community. They are very tech savvy. Their excitement to attend a new high school is very high. Even with a new building, the enrollment has exceeded the expected capacity of the building. Because of this, not all teachers could be assigned an individual classroom. I am a rotating teacher that moves from classroom to classroom.

My Project

I regularly use a computer and projector to present lessons. Having digital ink will allow me to present, save, and store everything presented in class. Every example, every screen shot and every slide from an entire day can be stored and made available on the school grade book for students (and parents) to view or print after class. Students benefit from seeing what was shown and solved in every class. This availability will be very helpful for students who have to miss class.

A small device can have huge impacts in student learning.

By having direct access to everything written on the board, students will no longer have to ask the teacher what they missed in class. Whether the absence is due to a school activity, an illness, or a tragedy, a student may miss and then come back to school- right on track with the other students who were present in class.
