My kids know we come into my room to work hard and learn. They come with many needs--a vocabulary and reading gap due to lack of English at home. They need other ways to learn and do research, so I want to provide extra tools to help by providing digital tools to my students.
On a typical day I see upwards of 50 students, all of whom are English Languages Learners who have either been in the US for a number of years, or who have only been here a few weeks.
They come from many countries (mostly South America). They all come in with varying levels of knowledge of English. Many come in with no English whatsoever. I have kids between Kindergarten and Third grade. Most come in with a great need for more early literacy skills--phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, etc. These students are able to do so much through the use of technology, and in many ways it makes some things even easier for my students. Some of them may not have books at home, but they do have and use technology often at home. I want to bridge that home-school gap by bringing more technology into my classroom.
My Project
These tablets would be used for two main purposes--to create and to learn. It would be a way for them to take pictures, make movies, music videos, write songs, create digital art and content, and to do research on our topics we are studying in class. I don't always have access to the digital tools my school does have, and this way we'd have our own class set! By teaching them how to use the tools effectively they could create using the arts to show their content knowledge. They would also practice literacy skills including through digital content and reading applications. They could practice using apps to better increase their knowledge and be able to show their knowledge, all while learning English!
I am a first year ESL teacher just starting out working at a Title I school This will provide me with more resources in which to help my students learn English vocabulary, share and create digital content, and learn vital literacy skills.
It will help my students have access to technology--tools they will need in the future. It will provide them with more tools to help them learn and show their learning. It will help them think even more that learning and creating are fun.
