Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are a very diverse population of 3300 of which is over fifty-percent free and reduced-price lunch and twenty-five percent English language learners with over 48 different languages. It is comprised of grades nine through twelve. With all the struggles of average high school experience, many of my students have added strain that no young person should have to endure such as full-time jobs, helping make ends meet, caring for family members, living on their own, and even struggle to eat three meals a day.
Being in my art classroom provides students with problem-solving skills, innovative thinking skills, and confidence that cannot be replicated in other courses.
The large atmosphere creates an environment of independence and 21st-century skills. These skills can be transferred into success in the modern workforce, college and more.
My Project
Recently we were lucky enough to receive an iPad through DonorsChoose. This iPad has engaged students in the digital drawing and encouraged those who were typically frustrated and disengaged with the use of traditional methods to complete art and photo assignments.
This iPad has become an amazing addition to our class, but to engage students in the drawing and digital components we are in need of an Apple Pencil and a keyboard.
An Apple Pencil would allow students to create original works of art digitally on our donated iPad. The Apple Pencil would provide students who are usually frustrated and disengaged with the use of a traditional mouse pad when drawing, an opportunity to use an updated method for digital drawing. Students who rarely have advanced technological opportunities would be excited to complete work for the class. Providing these students with the tools to engage in the iPad's capabilities would allow my students and I to connect through the learning of its features. Learning the functions of both the iPad and the drawing and editing capabilities will build a connection with my students. Being a teacher who has an opportunity to learn WITH my students will make the learning more engaging and meaningful to them. The techniques, the technology, and the learning would be a unique experience for all. The keyboard would allow the iPad to function as a laptop allowing students to create work to the next level.
The excitement over the iPad has been amazing and the students have become immediately drawn to the use of an upgraded device in the art classroom. I want to continue the engagement an application through the tools and materials meant to utilize this equipment. I can not wait to see what they would do with these materials!
