My students are an energetic bunch who are very interested in what is happening in the world around them. They're aware of how the world is changing physically and socially and they are invested in making those changes happen in positive ways. They're outspoken and opinionated and always championing for each other. Their voice and strength in advocating is one of my favorite things about them.
My students mostly come from lower socio-economic neighborhoods which means school is really a key part of offering them experiences they might not have otherwise.
They are excited and respectful of every new material we bring into this room. They'll often ask or request if we can help them experience personally things they've only heard or read about, everything from using tools to watching the Mars Rover feed to planting a garden. They want to try everything and their zest for experiences is infectious in the best ways!
They have an amazing sense of humor and when things go awry, they're able to assess where a project went off the rails and make new plans. They look at every setback as a learning opportunity instead of a failure. Their determination is amazing!
My Project
My students are continually engaged in projects that require them to think creatively and builds solutions. We recently acquired a GoPro camera for the classroom for the purpose of allowing them to film what they do day-to-day. Our hope is they can then take what they video and turn it into videos we can out on various social media platforms to connect with our families. Unfortunately the current technology at our school is minimal and fairly antiquated which makes editing the footage they get difficult. We want to get an iPad so they can use iMovie to edit and easily create their movies. Many of them are familiar with iMovie from their phones and personal computer and have shown adeptness in using it for personal projects.
