Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am the art teacher at a brand new high school(9th grade only) in the South Bronx. The Leadership Institute is located on Webster Avenue in a needy neighborhood. Our art medium is photography, but we are having difficulty completing assignments because we have no funds to purchase cameras. We would like to purchase 3 cameras for our students to use in school and a printer so our students can participate in the citywide art contests.
Many of our students come from low-income backgrounds (95% receive free or reduced price lunch) and it would be difficult for their parents to financially support our program. Our staff has been able to cross curriculum, incorporating writing skills to analyze other people's photos and specifically describe how they can improve upon their works. It is time, however, for our students to learn how the camera works and how they can incorporate the camera into their everyday lives (not just for memories, but for projects and other assignments). I would hate to think that technology to them would mean PSP and X-Box.
Students will learn not only how to take a quality picture, but how to manipulate the photo, how to crop their photos to ensure that their subjects are the main element of focus, and how to create a digital storybook or photo album and how to add music to their pictures.
Our school stands for community action and it is my hope to make the students proficient enough with the camera to photograph the rallies they will attend and to use their photos to create a published work that they can use to support their causes. Our first goal is to get our new school building up and running in time for the fall '06 school year. If we can show what is versus what can be we will have a better chance of winning what we want - our own building. Right now we rent space in another building and cannot stay past 3:00pm therefore,we cannot have after school activities which our students ask for everyday.
We would appreciate any assistance we can get, so our future leaders of the world (or New York at least)can master the art of photography and use it as an ends to a mean.
