"The camera is an instrument that teaches people how to see without a camera." Dorothea Lange. In my digital art class, I try to teach my students to see, to learn how to "create" a photograph, not "take" a photograph.
The 21st century learning model for public high schools wants technology to integrate throughout the curriculum.
Photography is a natural fit for this type of learning as it teaches through the visual senses to all types of students, as well as providing skills for careers. It also integrates into several college requirements for majors in the visual arts, computer science and journalism just to name a few. To teach these students, I simply need more working cameras.
My Project
New digital cameras will not only give my students more access to the main tool of photography; the camera, but they will also learn the new camera technology that is required of them in the professional working world. The digital world we live in today is highly competitive, and requires learning more technology skills as teenagers exit high school. Being able to teach my students with relative and updated equipment prepares them for a real career and successful post secondary education.
All students deserve opportunities to experience art in our amazing world.
Teaching a photography course is the perfect way to capture this! Our students have expressed their ambitions to participate in this opportunity and now I am hoping to be able to give that to them with new digital cameras!
