Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Living in a low income, urban environment, artistic expression is stymied in schools, available recreation, and one's neighborhood. A photography club will allow students an outlet for their pent up inner artists. Unfortunately, resources are scare. Fortunately, generosity is not.
The South Bronx, NY, is a neighborhood filled with concrete, debris, and poverty.
Nevertheless, my students approached me with the idea of a photography club. When I asked them what they would take photos of, they replied, "the beauty of the neighborhood around us."
It occurred to me that perspective is everything. These students didn't see the economic despair, lack of funding, or lack of scenery. They wanted to share their environment with the world, so everyone could see it through their eyes. A camera would change their lives, but they want to change your perspective.
My Project
With a few cameras and imagination my students will be able exposed to creative outlet that can open their minds to the wonders of the arts. New York as a tremendous amount of cultural experiences to offer, but students are not being introduced to them. Often, ideas steamroll, and if they are inspired by photography, chances are that they'll find other mediums of expression fascinating as well.
The introduction to photography will expose students to something that they once thought was reserved for "wealthy students." I want to teach them that behind a lens, everyone is equal, and judgment is purely subjective.
Hopefully photography will be more than just a hobby for some. In the South Bronx, many times students have a myopic view of their futures. I plan to show them how they can turn a passion into a career through exploration of possible jobs were they can utilize their photography skills.
